Stealing cars from Gurgaon only to drive them all the way to Nagaland to sell them off is no mean feat. But these three carjackers, including a native of Nagaland, had been doing just that for over a year now, until they were finally arrested by the crime unit of the city police on Friday.
The accused have been identified as Ilyas and Tahir from Bhondsi, and Santosh from Nagaland. Explaining the modus operandi behind the operation, the police said the trio would steal cars from Gurgaon and superimpose the registration number and other details of the disposed off vehicles on them. They would then drive the cars to the north-eastern state to sell them at throwaway prices.
These thieves had been active in the city for over a year now, the police said.
Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Sumit Kuhar said, “We are currently interrogating the accused. Many other theft cases will also be solved during the probe.”
“The accused were experts in fudging vehicle documents and they had done the same for the five Altos that we recovered from them. The thieves resorted to using registration numbers of disposed off, legal vehicles since they attract more customers,” said sub-inspector Rajkumar, in-charge of the team from crime unit-9 of the sector 39 police that nabbed the accused.
The team first arrested Ilyas and Tahir near the sector 56 red light on Sohna Road on Friday evening. Following the arrest, the duo divulged Santosh’s whereabouts, who was nabbed from Sohna.
The police have also recovered a truck from the accused’s possession. (Agencies)
