With increasing complaints of marginalisation and racial attacks on people from Northeast, the Delhi police is all set to induct 160 police officers every year from eight north-eastern states to address such issues. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Union minister of state (home) Kiren Rijiju after he visited the Delhi police headquarters at ITO in the morning.
Mr Rijiju met the Delhi police chief Bhim Sain Bassi in presence of special commissioners of police Deepak Mishra, Vimla Mehra, Taj Hasan, Muktesh Chandra and S.N. Srivastava. The letter was also signed by him in the presence of all senior officials.
Applauding the Delhi police for their work, the minister said: “I think that recruiting 20 police officials from eight north-eastern states will help in addressing the policing problems faced by region’s people in the city.” The eight states from where recruitment will be done are Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, Sikkim, Meghalaya and Tripura.
As per the plan, the police officials said that 10 male and 10 female personnel will be inducted in the police every year from eight states.
“What we have realised is that the Delhi police do not proportionately represent the people of north-eastern region in its forces. There are incidents in which we feel that north-eastern people have to be more visible.
Currently, there are just 39 police officials from north-eastern region in the Delhi police. Of these, 10 are Indian Police Service officers while the rest are constables, head constables or inspectors. Such a step would take the number to 160. “We have also decided to give the responsibility of recruitment to the state administration as we face a lot of difficulty in selecting them sitting here in Delhi,” said a police official
Earlier on Tuesday morning, soon after Mr Rijiju reached the headquarters, he was welcomed with a guard of honour. This was followed by a discussion on problems of the Northeast people with senior police officers. He is also likely to write a letter to all north-eastern states to encourage their youth to join the Delhi police. Mr Bassi had written a letter in this regard to all DGPs of these states. Mr Rijiju in his letter has asked the chief ministers to expedite the process. – The Asian Age
