Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dimapur Kesonyü Yhome (IAS) said that with over 70 thousand registered as unemployed in the State the number of educated unemployed youth both at the national and state level has become “extremely alarming and disturbing.”
Speaking as chief guest at Pradhan Mandri Kaushal Vikas Yojna (PMKVY) Mela here on 20 Jan at Pinnacle Skills, Dimapur, Yhome said the figure exclude those who have not registered themselves.
Pointing out the three major challenges faced in the Indian scenario includes issue of internal security, global terror and issue of unemployment he said unemployment problem throughout the country has grown like the sunrays.
Yhome said that the problem has become so contained that the topic itself cannot be taken into discussion anymore it needs to be addressed seriously.
Encouraging students to acquire skills since in this age of technological advancement, Yhome asserted that skill was a requirement apart from education.
He said that there are areas where machines alone can handle work of people, thereby creating unemployment for educated people. Therefore, in this aspect if the machines take over the jobs then educated or qualified persons would not be able to get jobs.
The DC therefore encouraged young people to acquire intensive skills so they could better utilize their education along with their skills.
He also said that in the 21st century “we” should be talking about people with skills rather than just education, as it would be an irony and tragedy for the whole system of education if skill enhancement was not part of it.
Yhome said that education which has been relevant for the last couple of centuries would have no space and opportunity for average people without skills.
He further asked the gathering to understand the gravity of unemployment and its situation thereby encouraged them to re-orient the challenge for a better society.
Speaking at the programme, as guest of honour, national skill development cooperation (ministry of skill development) North East region, executive member and principal, Dr. Sapna Poti said that North East has lots of potentiality for the fact that it has less population and was diverse in nature.
She also said that youth today in Nagaland should come forward and ask for the right to skill in order to get employed and learn to choose a career path instead of being a liability to the government and letting the government to “pamper them.” She further briefed about PMKVY and its benefits to the gatherings. Later, vote of thanks was delivered by Pinnacle skills, training and placement manager, Tenzin.
