Kolkata, West Bengal’s capital city, has become India’s first fully WiFi-enabled metro city. Reliance JIO is reportedly providing the services.
The WiFi services will be initially free of charge. The services inaugurated by the West Bengal chief minister, Mamta Banerjee have been first made available at Park Street. It will be next available in the Ghariahat-Gol Park area of South Kolkata and accordingly by the end of April 2015, the whole city will be WiFi enabled.
The West Bengal CM also informed the same through her Twitter account- “All my WiFi friends, I am tweeting using #WiFiKolkata. So proud to be first WiFi Metro city in India. Congratulations to us all.”
Reliance JIO spokesperson was quoted by media saying, “We have laid cables along a 500-km stretch of the city. The major part of Kolkata has been covered and the work in other parts is in progress. We are aiming to bring the entire Kolkata Telephones area under our 4G coverage. It might take another eight months to a year to do the job,” he has said.
The WiFi services would enable any WiFi device users to log on to the internet zone using a password provided. For Smartphone users, the services are available just a simple click away on the WiFi option.
New Delhi too is on its way to develop this facility soon. A free WiFi services in parts of Khan Market and Cannaught Place have been rolled out.
