It was a heart wrenching moment when Denmark’s star footballer Christian Eriksen collapsed just before half-time in the match with Finland in Saturday’s Euro 2020 match.
There was a brief lull and gloom for sometime as fans desparately waited for official information of Eriksen’s condition. After an hour, the organizers announced that Eriksen was awake and undergoing further examinations. The players were informed he wanted the match to continue. The match kicked off again which saw Finland beat Denmark by 1-0.
Two cardiologists, speaking to Telegraph Sport on condition of anonymity, say they believe Eriksen suffered cardiac arrest on the basis he underwent CPR and regained normal cardiac rhythm with the help of defibrillation. One said it would appear his heart was restarted within ten minutes. By the time he was taken off the pitch, he had his head up and his eyes were open.
By the end of the night Eriksen was able to speak to his team-mates over the phone.
The fast recovery can be attributed to the excellent health facilities available on the gound during international matches.
