Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu is set to be appointed as Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports) by the Manipur government, said Chief Minister N Biren Singh said on Monday. Chanu is currently employed with Indian Railways as a Ticket Collector.
Singh said that Mirabai would be rewarded Rs 1 crore, as was announced earlier, in addition to which she is receiving the post.
Biren Singh also shared a video of his interaction with Mirabai Chanu after she brought home the silver medal. “You won’t be collecting tickets at railway stations and trains anymore,” he tells her in the video.
The CM also announced that judoka Likmabam Sushila Devi will be promoted from the post of constable to sub-inspector in addition to being rewarded Rs 25 lakh on account of her participation in the Olympics.
Mirabai, who is the first Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic silver medal, landed in New Delhi on Monday to loud cheers.
