The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against five policemen in Nagaland for their involvement in selling arms and ammunition to the anti-national elements.

The five policemen who were named in the chargesheet includes one in the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) and another in the rank of Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Nagaland.

All the five officials had been chargesheeted under different sections of the Arms Act and IPC and for criminal conspiracy with common intention to commit criminal breach of trust by indulging in pilferage of huge quantities of live ammunitions from Government Kote and to sell those ammunitions to anti national elements in exchange of money, a statement issued by the NIA said on Thursday.

The Union Home Ministry had in 2013 ordered a probe by the Central investigating agency into diversion of arms and ammunition of Nagaland police by some unscrupulous policemen to an insurgent group. The Ministry had asked the NIA to re-register the case, which was then investigated by Nagaland police, at its Guwahati office and conduct a detailed probe into it.

Accordingly, a case was registered at Diphupar police station in Nagaland following the arrest of a Nagaland police constable from Dimapur in 2012 and the recovery of a huge quantity of ammunition from him.

It was found during the initial investigation that the accused was involved in supplying huge quantity of arms and ammunition to the NSCN (IM), a militant outfit operating mainly in Nagaland.

The cops included Enyihi alias Enyimi Chakhesang, Sejongmong Sangtam, James Ovung, Longlise Sangtam and Sashitsungba Ao alias Sashitsungba Longcher, the NIA statement said today. While Sejongmong Sangta was the then Superintendent of Police of Nagaland, James Ovung, was the then Sub-Divisional Police Officer.

The chargesheet which was submitted before the Special NIA court at Dimapur last Tuesday also mentioned that during investigation, the accused police officials were found involved in misappropriation of huge quantities of ammunition from the Arms Kote of Wokha district police in Nagaland by preparing forged documents during the period of 2011-2012, with an ulterior motive.
