Govt plans to make Nagaland a ”furniture making hub”

Departments of Industries & Commerce, Employment & Skill Development and Envt., Forests & Climate Change held a joint workshop on Wednesday at the conference hall of Forest department with a view to augment the manufacturing sector and job creation.

A press release by Industries and Commerce department stated that, workshop was attended by minister of Envt., Forests & Climate Change, C.M. Chang and advisor of Industries & Commerce, Employment & Skill Development, Imnatiba.

Exhorting the officials of the various departments, CM Chang said that each department should find ways to expand and to generate employment in the districts. He said that government has taken a decision to ban export of raw materials with an aim that local entrepreneurship in furniture making is encouraged. He said that this sector would give a lot of employment in all districts while also increase the revenue net of the government. He expressed happiness that the workshop was arranged and said that allied departments should come together and hold hands to develop the state.

Imnatiba mentioned that department of Industries & Commerce will soon develop manufacturing clusters in the state involving more than 90 manufacturing units. He also said that the department will undertake skill development in 22 trades under carpentry so that local entrepreneurs can venture into manufacturing of furniture.

Commissioner & secretary, Industries & Commerce K. Kevichusa, mentioned that wood based industry was a very important sector which can be developed in cluster programme. PCCF & HoFF Dharmendra Prakash mentioned that the forestry sector held the key to economic development of the state when it came to manufacturing. APCCF Vedpal Singh mentioned that there was a need for transition of wood based industries from raw material export to manufactured goods export. He also gave a presentation on the legal issues that govern the forestry trade sector. Director Industries & Commerce, Hokishe spoke on the need to develop the manufacturing units in cluster approach. Director Employment & Skill Development, Chiten mentioned the potential of furniture manufacturing sector, wherein the department has introduced skill development courses in 4 ITIs and will be introducing the same in another upcoming 4. A presentation was given by Dr. Kenei Miachieo on “Making Nagaland a manufacturing hub of furniture”.

Workshop was attended by high ranking officials of Industries and Commerce, Employment & Skill Development and Forests departments. It was agreed to constitute a high level-joint committee of Vedpal Singh, APCCF, Hokishe, director Industries & Commerce and Chiten Yaden, director, Employment & Skill Development to develop wood based industries in the manufacturing sector.
