Nagaland Govt slashes taxes on petrol and diesel

The Nagaland government on Monday cut down taxes on petrol, diesel and other motor spirits. The amended tax rate will be effective from Monday midnight. Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio had announced during the recently concluded assembly session that the government would look into the fuel rates.

Sentiyanger Imchen, Additional Chief Secretary of Finance department of the Nagaland government on Monday issued a notification and stated that “in exercise of powers conferred by sub-section 3A of the Nagaland (Sale of Petroleum and Petroleum Products including Motor Spirit and Lubricants) Taxation Act, 1967 (as amended), the Governor of Nagaland is pleased to notify that the rate of tax under entry serial number 3 & 4 of Schedule II of the Act shall stand amended. This notification shall come into force with effect from midnight of 22nd February 2021.”

The notification from the finance department stated that the rate of tax on petrol and other motor spirits has been reduced from 29.80 per cent to 25 per cent per litre or from Rs 18.26 to Rs 16.04 per litre (whichever is higher).

On the other hand, the tax rate for diesel has been reduced from Rs 11.08 to Rs 10.51 per litre or 17.50 per cent to 16.50 per cent per litre (whichever is higher), stated the notification.

According to the revised tax, petrol price will reduce Rs 2.22 per litre and diesel by 57 paise per litre from midnight of February 22.

Earlier, Assam and Meghalaya governments had slashed prices of petrol and diesel.
