“You’re in Nagaland, electricity goes off even in India”- India Today journalist’s comments draw criticism

Rupin Sharma / Rahul Kanwal

India Today news channel’s senior journalist Rahul Kanwal on Wednesday hosted a panel discussion regarding the case of fugitive Mehul Choksi. During the discussion, Kanwal made a mistake that has gone viral and has attracted widespread criticism.

The panel consisted of Rupin Sharma, Nagaland’s Director General of Police (Border), Choksi’s lawyer and a writer.

When Rupin Sharma was replying to Kanwal’s question about the possible outcomes in Choksi’s case, Sharma’s screen went black and he said, “Rahul my electricity has gone off.

Kanwal replied, “Don’t worry, you’re in Nagaland, electricity goes off even in India, please go on speaking Rupin, we’ll just listen to what you’re saying.”

The senior journalist did not seem to know that Nagaland is a part of India. This incident has since gone viral and people are criticizing the journalist.

The journalist has since then apologized for “the silp of tongue”.
