Nagaland legislature become opposition-less as NPF join PDA

TR Zeliang/ Neiphiu Rio

Nagaland has seen some interesting and fast paced political developments in the past few days. The opposition Naga People’s Front (NPF) has decided to join the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) government.

The reason – “to facilitate one voice for an early solution to the vexed Naga political issue.”

It was in 2015 that eight opposition Congress MLAs had merged with the NPF making Nagaland legislative assembly an opposition-less House.

The crucial decision was taken late Monday night as NPF legislators huddled together in the residence of Opposition Leader and former Chief Minister TR Zeliang in Dimapur.

TR Zeliang is scheduled to meet Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday to cement the grand alliance.

NDPP has welcomed the move by NPF, however, BJP is taking a more cautious stand and has decided “to consult central BJP leaders before taking any decision.”
