Former chief minister of Nagaland and sitting Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio was suspended from primary and active membership of Naga Peoples Front, ironically, a party which he is a founder member.
It was a foregone conclusion that the show cause notices served to Rio would result in his suspension. A veteran politician like him would be ready for this.
In a 12 point suspension order, party president Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu explained the reasons which allegedly led to Rio’s suspension.
Timing
The timing of this suspension is crucial. Modi Government’s council of ministers is due for a reshuffle (likely on 19th May). Rio was one of the probable MPs who could have been inducted. With the party suspension order in place now, it is unlikely that Rio will get a chance to be union minister.
Where is the reconciliation?
With two founding members Rio and Imkong Imchen receiving the boot, it is evident now that the much talked about reconciliation within the NPF party was merely a gimmick. As a senior party legislator pointed out that “action of the NPF against such stalwarts will only hasten the process of fragmentation of the party”.
General Elections 2018
With state general elections around the corner, it will be interesting to see if the Non-TR-Shurhozelie group forms a separate party or joins a national party. This development must be music for the ears of BJP. A weakening ruling party means better chances for them.
