Nagaland Election
The state is scheduled to go into polls on April 19 in the first phase of the elections. Due to the limited number of seats in Nagaland, General elections will be held in a single phase.
With just one parliamentary constituency, the sole seat in Nagaland presents a contested landscape.
The lush Northeastern state, famous for its tourist attractions, faces numerous social and political challenges that will shape the electoral course. Some of the issues include frequent power outages, unemployment, and inadequate healthcare facilities.
The election also draws influence from larger dynamics of regional politics, with unresolved matters such as the Naga Peace Accord, negotiations for a separate flag and constitution, and the Frontier Nagaland issue.
The tribal Christian-dominated state’s only Lok Sabha seat is currently held by an alliance of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but it faces stiff opposition from the Congress party.
The winning candidate for the Nagaland Lok Sabha seat in 2019 was Tokheho Yepthomi of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) Yepthomi’s victory marked a significant moment in Nagaland’s political history, as it reflected the electorate’s support for the NDPP-BJP alliance and their vision for development and good governance.
